Marriage is Good

In case the legal profession needed one more black mark, read this billboard purchased by a Chicago-based divorce attorney.

I don’t knock folks for being single; singlehood is a gift and ought to be valued as such. My fear, though, is that while marriage remains valued as an institution and carries with it various societal perks and recognitions, there grows a heightened sense of marriage as slavery at worst, and regrettable at best.

That marriage is hard work I will not contend. It often is quite hard. That’s because love is hard. When we perceive love to be something that happens to us, or strictly emotive, or at worst self-centered, of course that perception will fail – it’s not true!

How about a new billboard: “Life Is Short, Work to Keep Your Marriage Strong.”

A couple comments.

1. That billboard says nothing to me about the legal profession. It certainly does give another black mark to one idiot attorney. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of the legal profession is quite ethical and/or moral. But who knows, I could be evil as you imply.

2. There may not be anything wrong with thinking of marriage as slavery. Paul's letter to the Romans certainly begins with an assertion of himself as a slave to Jesus (per the Greek word, which was commonly used to refer to a slave as a piece of property). When two people truly enters into the union of marriage to be united in God, they have no choice but to make their marriage work. Similarly if you truly give yourself to Christ, it is incomprehensible to at some point not be Christian anymore. But, as you said, it takes work.
