"Freedom"

Great article copied in today’s State Journal on American Freedom.

America is the greatest country in the world. To say, though, that:
a.) America never needs improvement, or
b.) We’re not on the wrong path to keeping it the greatest country in the world,
is often perceived as nitpicky at best, or unpatriotic at worst.

To those who might say I'm nitpicky or unpatriotic, happy Independence Day to you tomorrow! Take a look at the State Journal’s list of things you are not free to do, and believe me when I say that to ask yourself why those freedoms aren’t yours is not an unpatriotic question.

Joseph Sobran commented on Alexis de Tocqueville’s visit to America in the 1830s: “Tocqueville wondered whether this happy condition could last. He forecast that democracy would devolve into bureaucracy, and we’d wind up with a ‘mild but extensive’ sort of tyranny, ‘without tortures or terrors’, but strong enough to control an essentially timid populace.”

I would dare say that Tocqueville's prediction was more right than wrong.

Happy Birthday America! I'm praying for you.
